The Geological Survey of India has made remarkable contribution at different stages of geotechnical investigations for the successful completion
of large numbers of Water Resource Projects including hydroelectric, irrigation and river linking projects within the country and abroad, in a safe
and cost effective manner. GSI has also extended its expertise in construction of a number of communication projects, thermal power projects, and
nuclear power plants and in urban development based on techno-economical and eco-friendly considerations.
As a nodal agency, GSI is entrusted with undertaking and coordinating landslide investigations and formulation of mitigation measures by developing
strategy / methodology for all types of landslide investigations in the country. GSI is also spearheading implementation of the proposed Action Plan
on Landslide Hazard Risk Mitigation of MHA and formulation of a landslide hazard risk mitigation code to be followed by all Government and other user
agencies. GSI has also initiated a National programme for Landslide Susceptibility Mapping at scale 1:50,000 (NLSM) covering 0.42 million sq. km
landslide prone hill area of the country in a phased manner.
Geoscientists of GSI are also engaged in seismic / earthquake studies like Seismic hazard microzonation, Active fault mapping, neotectonic studies, etc.
Desertification and its impact assessment, Geo-Environmental appraisal of mine and other anthropogenic contamination areas, Arsenic and Fluoride
contamination studies of groundwater in parts of the country are some of the socio-environmentally relevant studies which figure prominently in the
annual programme of GSI.
To understand the ecosystem from a global perspective, GSI has been conducting Glaciological Studies, Petrological studies and transect mapping in
Antarctica to decipher the Tectono-metamorphic evolution in the frozen continent. Similar glaciological studies are also conducted regularly in the
Himalayan glaciers
GSI also carries out researches in principal branches of fundamental Geoscience viz., Petrology, Palaeontology and Geochronology & Isotope Geology
and allied earth science related subjects with an aim to better understand and appreciate the earth processes. These research activities are primarily
carried out at three National Centres of Excellence in Geoscience Researches (NCEGR) operating from Kolkata, Faridabad and Bangalore along with
regional laboratories.
