Experimental Petrology StudiesBack to Mineral Characterisation Studies

Experimental petrology is a field of research concerned with experimentally determining the physical and chemical behaviour of rocks and their constituents. Experimental work involves simulating igneous or metamorphic conditions with specialized Machines. Samples may include synthetic minerals or mixes of minerals, fluids such as H2O and/or CO2 or actual rock compositions.
Experimental Petrological Laboratory in CPL presently having the facility of carrying out the following experiments, within its present infrastructure. These are:
  • Preparation of glass composition in high temperature Kanthal Furnace (at Tmax1650 ºC for continuous run and at 1700 ºC for 4 hours)
  • 1 Atm. melting experiments in graphite furnace (T max 1400 ºC for continuous run and 1450 ºC for approx three hours)
  • Hydrothermal experiments in Hydrothermal System Apparatus (Model: Leco HR IB 2) upto 900 ºC and 2 Kbar pressure
  • Strict limitation of variables allows us to understand what happens with changes in one variable, for example, composition or temperature. Phase diagrams for a mineral or mineral assemblage can be determined.
  • Thermodynamic data such as enthalpy of formation can be extracted.
  • Diffusion rates can be determined
